Description

A manual filter press is a type of filtration equipment used for solid-liquid separation where most of the operations, such as plate shifting and cake removal, are performed manually by an operator. It is commonly used in small to medium-scale industries and in Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) and Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) where the sludge quantity is relatively low. The working principle remains the same as other filter presses, based on pressure filtration. Slurry containing suspended solids is pumped into the filter press, where it enters the chambers formed between a series of filter plates lined with filter cloth. As pressure is applied through a feed pump, the liquid passes through the cloth as filtrate, while the solids are retained inside the chambers and gradually form a filter cake. In a manual filter press, the plates are tightened using a manual screw or hydraulic jack system before starting the filtration process to ensure there is no leakage during operation. Once the filtration cycle is complete and the chambers are filled with solid cake, the operator stops the feed pump and manually opens the plates one by one. The accumulated sludge cake then falls off due to gravity or is removed manually using tools. After cleaning the filter cloth if required, the plates are again closed and prepared for the next cycle. The main components of a manual filter press include filter plates, filter cloth, a manual or hand-operated closing mechanism, a feed pump, a supporting frame, and a filtrate collection tray. This type of filter press is simple in design, easy to operate, and cost-effective, making it suitable for industries with limited budgets or lower sludge generation. However, it requires more labor involvement, has a longer operation cycle, and is less efficient compared to semi-automatic or fully automatic filter presses. Overall, a manual filter press is a practical and economical solution for sludge dewatering in smaller applications, providing effective solid-liquid separation while maintaining low operational and maintenance costs.
