In an effort to save water and to facilitate irrigation-scheduling, Tech Source Solutions a Bangalore based firm manufacturers a handy, portable and user-friendly electronic moisture -indicating device, named SMI (Soil Moisture Indicator). • Using SMI farmers will benefit by schedule/plan irrigation and thus saving precious water, time, electricity for the pump sets and money to farmers. • Irrigation scheduling will avoid over useage of water and deficient supply of water to the crop. • Avoiding over supply and deficient water will improve the yield on the crops. The Instrument consists of sensor rods, push switch and coloured LED’s. For the farmer to check the soil moisture status of the soil. He has to insert SMI to the soil to a required depth based on the effective root depth of the plant to assess the soil moisture. Push the switch and one of the coloured LED’s will glow suggesting the farmer when he can schedule the irrigation. Four different coloured LED’s are available to indicate the status of the moisture.
