NEW DELHI: The government today said it is examining 2-3 models suggested by the Planning Commission and the Finance Ministry on having PPP model in the coal sector to boost production.
"Finance Minister in the Budget speechmentioned about having PPP (public-private partnership) model in the coal sector... Two to three models have been sent across by both Planning Commission and Finance Ministry and we are examining those models," Coal Secretary S K Srivastava said at a conference organised by PHD Chamber.
The Coal Ministry has already convened 2-3 meetings on it, he added.
"We will have one or two more meetings on it and we are trying to see as to how we can involve the private sector along with Coal India in improving the coal production in the country," Srivastava said.
Earlier, the government said that a committee formed to devise a policy framework under public-private-partnership for increasing domestic coal production has discussed various PPP models.
The panel is required to devise a PPP policy framework in order to increase production of coal.
In pursuance of the announcement of Finance Minister P Chidambaram in Union Budget with regard to PPP policy framework, a nine-member committee was set up in March.
The committee under the chairmanship of Coal Secretary has members from other ministries including Law, Labour and Finance among others.
