Gadkari asks jewellers to boost exports from MSMEs

‘Your total export is $25 billion and there is more potential in the world especially after COVID-19’

Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari on Monday said India has to increase the share of exports by micro, small, medium enterprises (MSMEs) to fulfil the dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“MSMEs have big contributions for the growth of the country,” said Mr. Gadkari. “In India’s total GDP growth, 30% is due to MSMEs. [About] 40% of our exports come from MSME segment which has created 11 crore jobs and made us self-reliant,” Mr Gadkari said.

He was speaking at the Expo 2022 Trade Fair being organised by the All India Gem & Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) in Mumbai.

“If we want to fulfil the dream of our PM we have to increase MSME exports to more than 50% [from the current share of 40%] and gem and jewellery industry plays an important role in this,” he said.

“Your total export is $25 billion and there is more potential in the world especially after COVID-19,” he added.

“In the coming days, India will do good business within the country but I wish you success in international market as well,” he told the jewellers community.

Speaking on the occasion Ashish Pethe, chairman, All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC), said, “We are trying to protect, progress and promote since past 17-18 years of our inception.”

“This show is for promotion of the industry where we can share our ideas in the best possible manner,” he added.
