UDHAGAMANDALAM: Nilgiris Nelikola Micro and Small Tea Growers and Farmers Development Society Society decided to guide and help Small Tea Growers to establish their own mini-speciality tea factories in various tea cluster zones of the Nilgiris, thereby making them price-fixers and not price-takers for their produce.
The Society, in its Executive Committee meeting held today, strongly disapproved the recommendations of Indian Institute of Plant Management (IIPM), Bengaluru, to continue the existing price sharing method, as it was the best one, its president, H N Sivan said.
Disapproving recommendations of Tea Board to continue with the existing 65:35 price sharing formula,
Representing over one lakh small farmers, the Society alleged that most of the tea factories have not implemented the existing 65:35 price sharing formula, recommended by Tea Board, in true letter and spirit.
Sivan said and sought immediate intervention of the Government to get a fair deal for the ailing small tea growers and honour the Court verdict in this regard.
As per the Madras Hight Court order of October, 2010, on a petition regarding implementation of Reality Market Price for the small farmers green tea leaves within six months, Tea Board through Commerce Ministry has appointed IIPM to undertake a scientific study, which had recommended to continue the existing sharing method, Sivan said.
