Over 7,000 firms registered with government in August

More than 7,000 new companies, including central and state level enterprises, got registered in August, with the government. 

Nearly nine lakh companies were active as on August 31, 2013, according to latest data available with Ministry of Corporate Affairs. 

"During the month of August 2013, a total of 7,179 companies were registered under the , 1956," the ministry said in a statement today. 

The Ministry said that and six state-owned firms with authorised capital of Rs 4,181 crore were incorporated as 'public limited' enterprises. 

"Recently (August 2013) six government-owned companies were registered under the Companies Act, 1956 as public limited companies with authorised capital of Rs 4,181 crore," Ministry of Corporate Affairs said in a statement today. 

"Of these, four are Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) and two are State Level Public Enterprises (SLPEs)," it added. 

Besides, data provided by the Ministry showed that a total 13.45 lakh companies were registered as on August 31, 2013, of which 8.99 lakh firms were "active". 

As per the data, 2.57 lakh companies had been closed, while another 30,127 were in process of being shut down. 

Moreover, the ministry said that as many as 1.44 lakh had not filed their annual returns/ balance sheets for more than 3 consecutive years, and were thereby classified as 'dormant'. 

The new Companies Act provides for faster registration for the companies.
