Rs 15,000 crore business expected this Karwa Chauth festival, says traders’ body CAIT

In the run-up to the festival, business from Delhi alone is expected to be around Rs 1,500 crore, said CAIT.

Festive season sales: Traders’ body Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) on Monday said that more than Rs 15,000 crore business is likely during the Karwa Chauth festival on November 1 this year. In the run-up to the festival, business from Delhi alone is expected to be around Rs 1,500 crore. CAIT President B C Bhartia and Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal in a statement said that “everything from jewellery, clothes, make-up material, sarees, puja calendar and puja materials including Karwa (earthen pot), sieve, lamp, flower sticks and other puja related materials will be purchased.”  

“Most women also buy story books and earthen lamps. Apart from this, various types of karwa thali including red glass bangles, toe rings, anklets, lockets and bangles are purchased. This time, karwas made of silver are also available in the market and their demand is expected to be high,” CAIT said.

“There has been a huge rush of women in the markets all over the country shopping for the holy festival of Karwa Chauth, and with two days remaining for the festival, the shopkeepers have prepared on a large scale, and the markets decorated,” said Bhartia and Khandelwal.

Other products purchased by women for Karva Chauth include ghee, Ganga Jal, rice, sweets, red mahavar, comb, bindi, bangles, and mehandi, among others.

CAIT has also projected significant business ahead of the wedding season this year. According to traders’ body, the first wave of the wedding season from November 23 to December 15 is expected to generate business worth Rs 4.5 lakh crore with around 35 lakh weddings likely to be solemnized during the period.

According to Bhartia and Khandelwal, the Delhi region alone may host 3.5 lakh weddings, generating Rs 1 lakh crore in the region. Last year, about 35 lakh weddings took place during the same period, generating business worth Rs 3.75 lakh crore.
