Tata-UKTI launch 'Doing Business in India' training programme

MUMBAI: The Tatas and the UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), a British trade and investment body, have launched the first edition of 'Doing Business in India' training and mentoring programme. 

The programme is brought in by the Tata Group's Pune-based 
Tata Management Training Centre (TMTC) and the British Council, Mumbai, and seeks to promote joint bilateral trade, especially among the small and medium technology companies from both the nations. 

The first leg of the programme has been underway in the city from October 1-5 and then it will move to Pune, Milind Pandit of TMTC told PTI here. 

During his visit to London in May this year, 
Finance Minister P Chidambaram, his British counterpart George Osborne and Tata Sons Director Syed Anwar Hasan had announced the Tata-UKTI mentoring and partnership programme, Steve Williams of UKTI said. 

The first edition will focus on three high-tech sectors -- next-generation software industry, mobile and digital networks and green power/sustainable energy, Williams said. 

Speaking about the event, Tata UK Executive Director David Landsman said: "The 
Tata Group has a significant presence in Britain, across a range of sectors. So it's important for us to be playing a wider role in growing business opportunities. 

"For us, it has been an excellent experience working with the UKTI to devise a programme to help them bring the best of innovative British SMEs to India. And, when they come back to England, we look forward to continuing to develop our relationships with them and to celebrating some great successes." 

The programme will include visits to relevant Tata companies in Mumbai and Pune and interaction with senior Tata officials and CEOs. 

Tatas are the largest private sector employers in the British 
manufacturing sector, employing over 50,000 at its Corus and JLR plants. 

Cost-side details of the programme were not revealed. The programme aims to increase British high technology SMEs' understanding of the business culture here. It also aims to encourage the creation of partnerships in the domestic market, and with domestic partners for global opportunities. 

As part of the programme, UKTI introduced 20 British SMEs- all from the telecom, energy, power, software and healthcare side and some of which are already present in the country-at the event. 

In the EU and England an SME is one that employs under 250 and has a revenue of less than 40 million euro per annum, Williams told PTI.
